Why insulate?

In winter much heat is lost as it rises through the ceiling and roof. It’s a waste of money and energy. Insulation works by
reducing the amount of heat exiting the home, keeping it warm and snug.

In summer, heat enters through the roof, turning some homes into ovens! Insulation reduces the amount of heat entering from
the outside.

Your roof and ceiling are where most of the heat enters and exits, so it’s most important to insulate here. You’ll reduce your energy bills by around $200-700 a year and help reduce the impact on our environment.

The 'R' word.

Ceiling insulation is designed to prevent heat being wasted through the roof in winter and prevent heat flowing in through the roof in summer.

To determine the right insulation for your home, you simply need to know what climate zone you live in, this will then determine what the right 'R value' (a measure of how much the particular material inhibits the transfer of heat) is for your home. The higher the R value, the more effective the level of insulation.

Your local council or your installer can advise what R value insulation material is right for your home. Below is a simple map of Australia that denotes the R value of the insulation material required in each coloured zone. (click image for PDF)

KEY
Yellow = R3.0 (climate zones 1,2,3)
Orange = R3.5 (climate zones 4,5,6)
Blue = R4.0 (climate zones 7,8)

Proceeds from the sale of Blue Sky Insulation goes towards supporting and educating disadvantaged Australian children.

No one would deny that children are Australia’s future, yet right now one in seven Australian children are living in disadvantage and do not have access to the same educational, health or life opportunities that many of us enjoy and often take for granted. Without support, the disadvantage they experience today is likely to continue into adulthood - and on to the next generation. The Smith Family, a national, independent children’s charity, works in partnership with other caring Australians to help disadvantaged Australian children.

As research has shown, supporting children’s education and learning is one of the most effective means of breaking the cycle of disadvantage and ensuring all children have the same opportunity to realise their potential. That’s why The Smith Family focuses on helping disadvantaged children get the most out of their education, so they can go on to make the best of their lives.

At the centre of our work, and the heart of our organisation, is our belief in the power and possibilities of relationships. For disadvantaged children to thrive, many of whom are growing up in lone parent and jobless households, they need to be connected to, and supported by, an extended family. At The Smith Family, we link disadvantaged children with education and learning programs, opportunities and supports, and connect them with those Australians who have the capacity, skills and resources to help. Our work in 95 communities is extended and enhanced by the more than 21,000 members of VIEW Clubs of Australia together with 6,500 volunteers from the community and our corporate partners, who volunteer their time and energy to ensure we reach children in need.

Our work is informed by our research and made possible through our network of strong partnerships with other organisations and individuals working towards our vision of a more caring and cohesive Australia.

Proceeds raised from the sale of Blue Sky Insulation are used to offset our social enterprise's administration costs, ensuring that funds from our supporters go directly to where they are most needed, our community programs. Your support will help us continue to provide education and learning opportunities to thousands of disadvantaged young Australians, ensuring they can get the best out of their education to go on to make the most of their lives.
